Windsurf: Pocket Check, Coastlines on Internasjonal Working Band: Part Three - Making Sound Decisions The only requirement you need to fulfill to read this article is interest in the topic; but the readers who will benefit the most are those who are in working bands (or duos or solos or trios or … you get the point). It doesn’t matter if you’re doing cover tunes at weddings, half covers and half your own material around town, or doing all originals and working as much as possible while hoping to open for a big act in your genre on your way to what is called “the top” — you need a demo. (A word about “the top: As Gertrude Stein said of Oakland, “There’s no there there,” and if you stop reaching because you think you’ve “arrived,” you’ll watch as others rise past you.) Annuals: Such Fun - CD Review and Free Download A penchant for aural experimentation by way of eclectic arrangements and ping-ponging sonic identities make North Carolina indie sextet Annuals’ sophomore full-length, Such Fun exactly what the title implies. The album is an entertaining romp filtered through frontman Adam Baker’s unique inner ear and fastened together by the group’s fiercely calculated execution and Baker’s own elastic voice. Newsletter: Neil Young CD & iPod Giveaway at OnlineRock
Just five days shy of his 23rd birthday, Neil Young‚s solo career launched in earnest with an engagement at The Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Having left the Buffalo Springfield only six months earlier, Neil brought just his guitar along to the facility operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan as a ministry to University of Michigan students, faculty and staff.
The night of November 9, 1968 (and the night following), he performed his music and told stories between the songs to a rapt audience. The performances were recorded those evenings on a TEAC 2 track tape recorder, the tapes kept in storage over the intervening years. Reprise Records is giving away five copies of the CD to OnlineRock readers. In Addition, an iPod Shuffle will be included with one of those five CDs. Cale Parks: Some Sew, Some Find - Free MP3 Download A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks’ solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Winterpills: Central Chambers - CD Review Winterpills is the sort of word you might expect to see on the side of a Crayola crayon, beside Bittersweet, Cornflower and Sunglow; the crayon itself would no doubt be something grayish-blue, a sort of "hazy shade of winter." But alas, no crayon has yet been named for the indie band from Massachusetts, formed in the melancholy dead of winter five years ago. OnlineRock Podcast Vol. 11

The Homosexuals: Slow Guns, Love Guns? EP on Serious Business I’m From Barcelona: Who Killed Harry Houdini? - CD Review Like the soundtrack to a dozen unmade indie dramedy film previews, I’m From Barcelona’s sophomore disc is packed with catchy pop melodies, quirky lyrics and enough tear-swelling, life-affirming choruses to overtake the most cynical of listeners. Packleader and frontman Emanuel Lundgren leads his 28 (!) band members through the indie-pop, kitchen-sink motions without ever devolving into chaotic festivity or arrhythmic posturing. Medeski Martin & Wood: Free Go Lily - Free Download The Radiolarian Series - named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons - is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release the music. The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums. Check out "Free Go Lily", the first single from Radiolarians I, via the link above. One On One with Shane Glass – Business Manager and Tour Accountant by Nikki O’Neill In this month’s column, we’ll be talking about touring. Why is it that so few of the top-selling arena acts are under age thirty? How do bands make money on the road besides ticket sales and merchandise? And how do labels strategize tours for their newly signed bands? Shane Glass, currently on the road in Europe as Stevie Wonder’s tour accountant, will tell us about the bigger trends in touring and how artists make money in this area today. And if you’re an unsigned band trying to plan your first tour, Shane has some expert advice for you too.
