Hitwise reports that www.blinkx.com recently surpassed Google Video in the UK with weekly market share of visits. (Note they say Google Video not You Tube…)

According to Internet measurement service Hitwise, blinkx increased its market share of visits within the Entertainment-Multimedia category by 541% between January and October 2007, outperforming the growth of the industry. NBC refunds advertisers as ratings plunge
Fourth-ranked broadcaster NBC has quietly begun reimbursing advertisers an average of $500,000 each for failing to reach guaranteed ratings levels, the first time a network has taken such a step in years, media buyers said.
Networks usually offer make-goods—free advertising slots—in the event of such shortfalls. But NBC has none to give. In fact, no broadcast network has much ad inventory left between now and year’s end—except for, perhaps, a handful of units the week between Christmas and New Year’s, and that doesn’t do much for advertisers chasing holiday shoppers.
CBS, ABC and Fox also are doling out make-goods, primarily for the first quarter. They have blamed softness on a new ratings formula, but media agencies disagree. None of the networks would comment. Full Story :: Click Here

Merriam-Webster’s Word of ‘07: ‘w00t’
Expect cheers among hardcore online game enthusiasts when they learn Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year. Or, more accurately, expect them to “w00t.”
“W00t,” a hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness or triumph, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher’s online poll for the word that best sums up 2007.
Merriam-Webster’s president, John Morse, said “w00t” was an ideal choice because it blends whimsy and new technology.

In-Flight Internet Too Tempting for Some
Warren Adelman’s colleagues know him as “Thumbs”: Like many executives, he is adept at checking e-mail on his BlackBerry and does it almost constantly.
Unable to do so during flights, Adelman welcomes business trips as “an opportunity to decompress a little bit from the constant flow of e-mail, perhaps catch up on a book.”
“It’s one of the few downtime environments you get in this day and age,” said Adelman, president and chief operating officer of GoDaddy.com Inc., a registration company for Internet domain names.
An invasion of his sanctuary is imminent, though, as airlines around the world would make available in-flight Internet services.
On Tuesday, JetBlue Airways Corp. began offering e-mail and instant messaging on one aircraft. Broader high-speed services, including Web surfing, are to come next year on some flights of AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Air Group Inc.’s Alaska Airlines.

Syrian authorities have blocked Facebook, the popular Internet hangout, over what seems to be fears of Israeli “infiltration” of Syrian social networks on the Net, according to residents and media reports.
Residents of Damascus said that they have not been able to enter Facebook for more than two weeks. An Associated Press reporter got a blank page when he tried to open Facebook’s home page Friday from the Syrian capital. Full Story :: Click Here

Stolen laptop had 268,000 blood donor IDs Social Security numbers among data contained on laptop
A spokewoman for the blood center believes information is secure Minnesota-region blood donors, Memorial Blood Centers said Wednesday.
The laptop was in a briefcase that was stolen just before 7 a.m. on Nov. 28 as workers were setting up a blood drive, said Laura Kaplan, manager of marketing and communications with the blood center. “They were setting up for a blood drive and this was in a briefcase,” she said. “The police have told us they believe it was a random crime.”
Memorial Blood Centers is a nonprofit blood bank based in St. Paul, Minn. It operates 10 blood collection centers in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin and collects about 125,000 units of blood each year.
Kaplan said that the laptop was protected by several passwords, but she would not say whether its hard drive was encrypted. “We believe that the data is secure,” she said. Full Story :: Click Here

In Your Face, RIAA. The University of Oregon Takes A Stand. By Kristen Nicole
In Arista’s case against 17 unidentified students at The University of Oregon, the state’s Attorney General has made a motion to quash the subpoena obtained by the RIAA. This is a rather radical move, and the first of its kind that we’ve seen in cases regarding the RIAA, where most of the motions have come from the students and not the institution. It seems to be a very different stance than most educational institutions, who seem to be more cooperative when it comes to the RIAA. Full Story :: Click Here

Total Time Spent Online is Up 24.3%. By Jay Meattle
Is it a good time to be long-term bullish on the Internet? Take a look at the chart linked below-
We are spending more and more time consuming information online. Logically, since time is finite online advertising spend should follow a similar trajectory with marketers allocating their ad budgets in proportion to where people are spending their time.
Needless to say, this is a time of considerable opportunity for online media properties and online marketers! Full Story :: Click Here

Dave Winer, creator of the RSS 2.0 standard on which podcasting is based, offers some interesting comments on the state of podcasting at his blog:
Specifically about podcasting-Thursday, November 29, 2007 by Dave Winer.
I’ve heard that podcasting didn’t achieve its promise, and I guess it’s time for me to say what I think about that.
First, obviously it depends on what you felt was the promise.
Second, it depends whether you think there’s more to do.
I think there is, and when that’s done, podcasting will become more than it is.
As much as I love the iPod, it is not a great podcast player. However, unfortunately, it is the best podcast player you can buy, today. Full Story :: Click Here

The Secret Strategies Behind Many “Viral” Videos-Dan Ackerman Greenberg
Have you ever watched a video with 100,000 views on YouTube and thought to yourself: “How the hell did that video get so many views?” Chances are pretty good that this didn’t happen naturally, but rather that some company worked hard to make it happen – some company like mine.
When most people talk about “viral videos,” they’re usually referring to videos like Miss Teen South Carolina, Smirnoff’s Tea Partay music video, the Sony Bravia ads, Soulja Boy – videos that have traveled all around the internet and been posted on YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, Facebook, Digg, blogs, etc. – videos with millions and millions of views. Facebook backlash over sale of personal data
Growing unrest among the users of social networking website members could turn into a full-blown rebellion as they demand greater control over the way their personal information is marketed in cyberspace.
Following weeks of discontent on group discussion boards on Facebook, one of world’s biggest internet sites, it is facing a privacy backlash organised by the US-based online democracy watchdog, MoveOn.
Thousands of American Facebook members have signed a petition calling on the website to remove a new advertising program called Facebook Beacon, which can be used to track the spending habits of Facebook users on external websites. Full Story :: Click Here

Studies showh online holiday spending uncertain
November 22, 2007 (IDG News Service)—Researchers at comScore are expecting a solid online shopping season, but another research group isn’t so sure.
For the first 18 days of November, comScore reported more than $7 billion in online retail spending. That’s up 17% over the same period last year, which brought in $6 billion. The growth happened even though the first week or so of the month showed only modest gains compared with the year earlier. Roughly the last half of the period studied grew by more than 20% compared with last November, comScore found.
ComScore is predicting that shoppers will spend $29.5 billion during the months of November and December this year. That would be a 20% increase over last year, which brought in $24.6 billion.
However, another researcher is warning that online spending might not reach the growth levels seen in recent years. A study conducted by Nielsen Online found that shoppers expect to spend the same portion of their holiday budget online as they did in 2006.

WASHINGTON (AP)—Sure, instant messaging is fast and efficient. For many teenagers, it’s also a great way to avoid those OMG moments – that’s “omigod” – of mortifying face-to-face confrontations.

The specs will apparently remain consistent with what we’ve been hearing for so long now—$399, 6-inch screen, no integrated backlight, WIFi, EV-DO on Sprint for OTA book purchases, and a big ol’ dose of the ugly—but rumors are rumors, so don’t get too mopey if Monday comes and goes with no announcement.

Web Videos Stealing TV Viewers, and Marketers
WHY are fewer viewers watching the new fall television series? Perhaps because they are too busy watching video online.
As broadband service becomes more available at home, the growing prevalence of video programming on the Internet is catching the attention of consumers — not to mention marketers and media companies.
“Video has been liberated” from the TV set, Beth Comstock, president for integrated media at NBC Universal, said last week at a panel at the Ad:Tech conference in New York.

YouTube will do higher quality, not HD
YouTube is planning to upgrade the quality of its videos within the next three months, but it will not be high-definition video.
The social video company has been testing higher quality video, but it does not want to alienate its traditional users with long load times. YouTube provides content to everyone, co-founder Steve Chen said at the NewTeeVee conference.
Other sites had incorrectly reported that Chen was referring to high definition. One of the moderators of the panel at the NewTeeVee Conference where he revealed his upcoming plans for YouTube cleared the air.
“What I got out of [Chen’s] comments was that YouTube’s first priority is making sure everyone, everywhere, on any device, could view every video on the site. Steve actually said himself, as the commenters above are saying, that HD really doesn’t make sense for the short, silly clips that are YouTube’s bread and butter,” Liz Gannes wrote to AlleyInsider.
