Group To Discuss Upper Missouri River Fish Management The first meeting of the workgroup that will develop fish-management plan recommendations for three popular Upper Missouri River reservoirs is set for Monday, Jan. 12 at the Montana Association of Counties, 2715 Skyway Dr., in Helena.
Council Grove Access Road Closed The access road into Council Grove State Park, located six miles west of Missoula, has been closed due to recent snowfall. Fur Handling Workshop Offered in Deer Lodge A fur handling workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, in Deer Lodge. The all-day workshop, sponsored by the Montana Trappers Association, will offer participants information and demonstrations on fur handling safety, ethics and techniques. Missoula Meeting Planned to Discuss Smith River Management Plan Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) is seeking comment on a draft recreation management plan and environmental assessment for Smith River State Park and river corridor, popular among boaters, campers and anglers who apply annually for a permit to float the 59-mile-long stretch of river. Wolf Depredation West of Dillon A domestic calf was killed by wolves on private land in the Grasshopper Valley west of Dillon. USDA Wildlife Services confirmed the depredation on Jan. 5. Time to Apply for Smith River Permits Forget the blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and snowdrifts, it's time to start thinking about lazy summer days drifting down the Smith River. Applications for a Smith River permit are available at all Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices or on the FWP website: www.fwp.mt.gov -http://www.fwp.mt.gov- . Applications must be postmarked or submitted no later than Tuesday, Feb. 17. Bighorn Sheep Captured Moved to Utah Montana wildlife officials captured 60 bighorn sheep the first weekend in January for transplant to Utah. "We captured nine young rams," says Brent Lonner, Fish, Wildlife and Parks wildlife biologist. "The rest were ewes and three or four lambs." The sheep are going to supplement a herd in northeastern Utah. The sheep were taken from two spots on the Rocky Mountain Front: At Willow Creek by Benchmark Road and in the Sun Canyon. Swan Lake Fish Sampling Program Meets Goals In 2008; Agencies Propose To Move Ahead With Expanded 3-Year Program Biologists report that the interagency project to sample and begin to reduce the lake trout population last fall in Swan Lake came off successfully. The fish sampling and removal took place over about a three-week period in September. The sampling enabled biologists to determine how many lake trout lived in Swan Lake by using a “depletion estimate” technique. Smith Lake Derby Attracts 300+ Anglers The 38th annual Smith Lake Ice Fishing Derby held on Saturday attracted a large crowd of more than 300 anglers ranging from 1-80 years old. The event is put on by the Sunriser Lions Club as a public service to the community and as a way to make a modest amount of money to donate to family fishing pond programs.
