Two bewildered men in the blast and smoke
MOOLCHAND } He had on mind some worries on that day’s collection. Barely enough, he thought before he had seen a tall, young man waving to stop.
‘Bhaisaheb, Patel Nagar chaloge? Mere ko Gaffar Market main dus minute ka kaam hai. Main tumhe halting charges bhi doonga.’ (Will you go to Patel Nagar? I have to stop at Gaffar Market for 10 minutes. I will pay you the halting charges). The fair young chap looked close to six-foot and sported a light beard. He seemed to be in his mid twenties.
Moolchand glanced at his watch : 5.30 pm.
Through the tame evening, Moolchand saw the motion of plush cars around the Imperial Hotel. In the passenger mirror he saw that the young man had settled with a bag in the back seat. The auto rickshaw moved.

LONG-DISTANCE DIPLOMACY } With bleary eyes, I picked up the buzzing phone and saw something like 'Oama Calling'. In the little light and in a cursing mood, I couldn't really make out if it was Obama or Osama. Hell with these ones, plucking off people from sleep for godammit reasons, I'm gonna get under the pillow, and so I muttered caring not to wake up our dog, Odama, lying under the bed, and went back to sleep.

Freedom from cant
KASHMIR } All three days I’d been in Kashmir, I was wary of the figures dressed in army camouflage. They prowled everywhere, every hundred feet on the left and right of the National Highway and along the lanes as well.
For the past 60 days or so, since about the end of June, the people of Kashmir have been free. Free in the most profound sense. They have shrugged off the terror of living their lives in the gun-sights of half a million heavily armed soldiers, in the most densely militarised zone in the world, writes Arundhati Roy.
I kind of agree with her, from what I felt in those three days. Yet, a land is not run on the principles of poetic reveries. The State always plays a different version of Sudoku than you and I know of.

HANSSEN, OSAMA, AND YOU } Robert Hanssen was arrested on Feb. 18, 2001, for the worst security breach in the FBI's history. Last night I was watching it.
Many wracked their brains to find out the 'why' of it. Authors, forensic psychologists, criminologists, and intelligence analysts tried deciphering the enigma called Hanssen. The counter-intelligence officer who prayed Rosary every day, also passed on classified materials to the Soviet and Russian governments for 22 years. He devoted himself to the Catholic order of Opus Dei and watched porn, and bought a Benz for a Washington stripper, with who he never had sex.

THE NUN OF ALUVA } I saw the video. The raw, patchy, shaky shot that would burn all the Bishops’ asses. That would do the rounds till life on the earth would end.
It wasn’t what the fumbling right palm of the naive nun did on the man’s organ that made me cringe. It was her immaculate wonder, when she held it, that burst of bliss from her human depths which sent a shiver through me. I couldn’t watch the rest of it for feeling like a party to the man’s cunning. Think for a moment about the contrast of the deepest personal flesh-wish of a 37-year-old woman, her innate thrill, her final trust in the humans, and the cold, planned betrayal by the man whose throbbing villainy stood out unzipped while his devious left arm hid a mobile camera, sucking in on every moment of the nun’s unadulterated joy.
