NWF President & CEO Reacts to Obama’s Call for Climate Action WASHINGTON, DC (November 18, 2008) President-elect Barack Obama delivered a speech via video today to the bipartisan Governors Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles.
Larry Schweiger, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, said today:
With todays call for action on global warming, President-elect Obama has kicked the gears of change into motion. The call for action will echo from the halls of Washington to the capitals of nations around the world.
After years of gridlock in Washington, Obama has offered America and the world a new beginning that promises to revitalize our economy with clean energy and to protect our planet in peril.
As world leaders gather in the coming weeks in Poland to negotiate a pathway out of the climate crisis, the eyes of the world will be upon America and our newfound resolve to rejoin global efforts.
The American public stands behind Obamas call for action. According... Time for a Renaissance in Wildlife Protection Statement by John Kostyack Executive Director of Wildlife Conservation and Global Warming National Wildlife Federation
Washington, DC It is time for a renaissance in wildlife protection in America. For too long, our threatened and endangered species have been allowed to slip further toward extinction. We must rollback the rollbacks, mend the holes in the safety net, and restore to health the array of plants, fish and wildlife that define our nations natural heritage.
In addition to repairing the damage done to laws meant to prevent extinctions, we must get ahead of the extinction curve. We need to address the climate crisis, restore scientific integrity to our agencies, and invest in a new era of conservation for wildlife and ecosystems.
For the last eight years, the Endangered Species Act has been a target for attack. Funding has been slashed, protections have been denied, science has been ignored, and responsibilities have been avoi... Post-Election Poll: 78% of Voters See Clean Energy as Pathway to Revitalize America’s Economy WASHINGTON, DC (November 7, 2008) A new poll from Zogby International of voters in Tuesdays elections shows more than three-quarters of Americans see clean energy as a key to Americas economic health. The poll, conducted Wednesday and Thursday, shows 78 percent of voters agree that investing in clean energy is important to revitalizing Americas economy.
The poll also showed 57 percent of voters said it was important in how they voted to back candidates who support reducing global warming pollution. This is an increase from the 2006 elections, when Zogby first identified that global warming had emerged as an important electoral issue. In 2006, 49 percent of voters identified the issue as important.
In addition, 60 percent agreed that elected officials should make combating global warming a high priority.
The results also showed increasing interest among key demographic groups in candidates who support action on climate change: <... Getting 'Out' Is 'In' CONTACT: Craig Culp, (301) 509-0925 (c), (202) 797-6637 (o), culpc@nwf.org

New Hope for a Planet in Peril WASHINGTON, DC (November 5, 2008) In his victory speech last night, President-Elect Barack Obama called on America to defend a planet in peril as one of the three great challenges of our time: The challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.
Larry Schweiger, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, said today:
President-elect Obama and the incoming Congress offer new hope that Americans will come together to repower America with clean energy that revitalizes our economy and defends a planet in peril from the climate crisis. With all the talk about red states and blue states leading up to the election, 2008 is the year that the electoral map turned green with support across the nation for clean energy.
This election was powered by a voting public that wants dramatic and meaningful change, especially for a new energy futur... Interior Department's Announcement Of Cooperation With NWF On "Get Outdoors, It's Yours" Initiative Statement by Larry Schweiger, President & CEO, National Wildlife Federation On the Department of Interior's announcement of a "Pledge of Cooperation" with NWF on its "Get Outdoors, It's Yours" initiative, a national campaign designed to raise awareness of the opportunities for Americas youth to connect with the outdoors and re-engage with nature, unveiled in Baltimore, Tuesday, October 14, 2008. Get Outdoors, Its Yours" is a fantastic message for both kids and their parents and can help reverse the trend of moving American childhood indoors. Parents who grew up playing outdoors, as I did, realize we only love what we know, and only protect what we love. The sad reality is that American childhood is now largely being lived indoors, cut off from contact with nature. Its time to get kids to trade screen time for green time.
With electronic entertainment replacing unstructured outdoor experiences, many children... |
